The number of new cars sold in Co Louth last year was up 0.8% on the previous year.
New figures from SIMI show that there were 2,796 new cars bought in the Wee County in 2018, up 22 on the year before.
There were four new cars purchased in December, up from three in the same month of 2017.
With 130 sales the Nissan Qashqai was the biggest selling model sold in Louth last year. This was 30 sales ahead of the Ford Focus in second place. Completing the top 10 models sold were the Hyundai Tucson (95), Toyota Yaris (89), Peugeot 3008 (83), Toyota C-HR (78), Nissan Micra (77), Skoda Octavia (73), Ford Fiesta (68) and Dacia Duster (64).
It was no surprise therefore that Nissan was the biggest selling manufacturer in Louth last year with 337 sales, up 12% from 301 the year before. Rounding out the top 10 were Toyota (298), Ford (280), Renault (241), Volkswagen (238), Peugeot (217), Hyundai (215), Kia (191), Skoda (182) and Dacia (116).
Of the cars sold last year 1,216 were Jeep/SUV standard. This made up 43.5% of the market.
Diesel was again the most popular engine type sold with 1,462 sales but this was down 19% from 1,804 the year before. By contrast petrol was up 28.3% to 1,119 from 872 and petrol electrics up from 85 to 168. There was also a 208.3% increase in electric cars sold, up from 12 to 37, while petrol/plug-in electric hybrids saw their sales jump from just one in 2017 to 10 last year.
Grey was the most popular colour with 984 sales followed by white/ivory (501), red/maroon (440), black (400) and blue (346).
While sales were up in Louth they were down 4.4% nationally from 131,332 in 2017 to 125,557 last year. Volkswagen with 13,775 sales was the most popular manufacturer nationwide with the Hyundai Tucson the biggest seller with 4,026 sales.
